How Sewer Pumps Work

A sewer pump functions to move sewage liquids and solids from one location to another. If a home, business, or other building is located above-grade, gravity acts as the driving force to move waste downhill, from its source in the home to a septic tank or municipal sewer line. If the waste in the building originates from the basement, however, it is situated below the level of the sewage or septic lines, and gravity is ineffective to move the waste from the home. In this case, a sewer pump is installed at the lowest point of the sewage basin, positioned at the floor level of the basement or below it as needed.

A sewer pump is powered through a 10-25’ electrical cord, and its housing is comprised of cast iron. Some housings have legs attached to keep the pump several inches from the bottom of the barrel. Much of the time, the pump will be submerged in a sump basin, which is designed to hold approximately thirty gallons of waste, and is generally automatic. This automation comes with a floating switch, which turns the pump on and off whenever sewage in the basin reaches a certain level. After waste reaches this point, the pump will turn on, pumping waste water out of the basin, up to ground level, and then on to the septic tank.

Sewer pumps and sump basins are completely safe to have in your home, provided they have been installed correctly. Following its installation, the top of a sump basin is sealed, so that no waste or odor leaks out. With proper maintenance, a sewer pump can last well over a decade, making them a worthwhile investment in addition to being an important component of septic tanks ensuring that waste is properly moved away from your property. At Speedy Rooter, we offer sewer pump repairs, installations, and maintenance services to keep your system working smoothly for many years and help you avoid any major surprises.
